On the historic occasion of the 150th anniversary
of the Battle of Solferino and San Martino,
you are cordially invited to visit the
"AGRIGELATERIA
SULL'AIA"
At this dairy ice
cream farm, traditional values and recipes are combined with modern production technology for a unique gourmet experience. Dairy ice cream is produced every day from freshly
milked cows' milk.
The
AGRIGELATERIA produces "super-premium" dairy ice cream, meaning
it uses high quality ingredients and no artificial additives, no preservatives, no flavourings or colouring, no
hydrogenated fats, emulsifiers or
stabilizers. No extra air is injected to reduce ingredients and costs (as happens with most soft ice creams).
Only the best, freshest natural
ingredients are used for an intense tasting dense ice cream!
As
the winner of 1ST prize at the International ice cream competition held in
Longarone in December 2008, it can justifiably claim that its ice cream parlour serves the best dairy ice cream in
the world. A tempting ice cream take-away service is also on offer - as well as
fresh milk, yoghurts, hard and soft
cheeses and wine - all produced on site.

SOLERFINO and SAN MARTINO BELLA BATTAGLIA
The
Battle of Solferino and San Martino was fought on
June 24, 1859 and resulted in the victory of
the allied French Army under Napoleon III and
Sardinian Army under Victor Emmanuel II (together known as the Franco-Sardinian Alliance) against the Austrian
Army under Emperor Franz Josef. It
was the last major battle in world history where all the armies involved were
under the personal command of their monarchs. Over 200,000 soldiers fought and on this single day about 40,000 on both sides were left dead or wounded on the
battlefield.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
Henri
Dunant was a Swiss businessman who witnessed the aftermath of the battle and recorded this in his book A Memory of Solferino
which inspired the creation of the International
Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1863 and the Geneva Convention in 1864, in
recognition of which he was belatedly awarded the first Nobel Peace Prize in
1901.
The village of San Martino was renamed San Martino della
Battaglia and a tower,
museum and ossuary were erected as a monument to the battle and its fallen. The site is a few Km to the south of Sirmione and Lago di Garda and, each year, San
Martino holds a festival to remember this battle.
This year it has particular significance, being the 150th anniversary of the battle.
On the historic
occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Solferino
and San Martino
Statesmen, politicians and dignitaries from all over the world will
attend the remembrance day festival at the Tower of San
Martino della Battaglia on June 24th
2009 marking not only the tragic loss of life, but also
the inspiration which sprung from this event, resulting in the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
As a close neighbour to San Martino della Battaglia, the
Agrigelateria will mark this occasion with its
own festival of its finest dairy ice cream.
